  • Isolated (500V) from input and output control interface: RS232 or RS422 (38400 bit/s)

Fastwel CPC310

The CPC310 incorporates 2x LVDS, 2x LAN 10/100/1000, 4x USB, 1x Serial ATA port, 4x Serial (RS232, RS422/485) and 1x LPT parallel, 8x separately programmed digital I/O lines, PS/2 keyboard and mouse port and connector for CFast drives.

The CPC310 incorporates a 32-bit 33 MHz PCI bus supporting up to 3x bus master devices and a 16-bit 8MHz ISA bus allows compatibility with most PC/104 modules and DDMA, ISA, IRQ support.

Integrated video controller with 3D/2D acceleration enables direct operation with a standard analog monitor connected via VGA and digital TFT panels using LVDS connectors.

The PC/104-Plus specification establishes a standard for high speed PCI bus for embedded applications in an industry standard PC/104 form factor allowing fast data transfer over PCI bus, low cost due to PC/104 self-stacking and high reliability due to PC/104 inherent ruggedness. The module’s form-factor is the same as PC/104 meaning PC/104-Plus can be said to be PC/104 form-factor compliant.

PC/104-Plus modules — Communication and Navigation Module (CNM350) and Graphics Co-Processor Module (VIM301). More and more manufacturers of rugged embedded electronics are focusing on railway solutions. The panel PCs for railways should meet strict industry requirements: they have to be compact, light weighted ,resistant to multiple shocks and vibrations, compliant to EN50155 and other standards. Rugged railway Panel PC  BS04 stands out from a bunch of similar products due to its smart design and customization options. This is why I prepared a short overview of the product, mentioning the main technical characteristics and distinctive design elements:

HMI rugged railway Panel PC BS04 , brief description

Rugged Panel PC for railway transport BS04 features 10.4″ display, dual core 32bit/64bit Intel PineviewD (D510) х86 CPU,  1 GB soldered DDR2 SDRAM is designed to withstand electromagnetic and mechanical shocks, as well as wide temperature ranges.

Harsh environment conditions

The HMI Panel PC BS04 operates in the following environmental conditions:

  • Operating temperature is –50°С…+60°С
  • IP65 at front panel
  • IP40 for the rest of the enclosure
  • Shocks/vibration: 10G/1G

Technical characteristics and certification

BS04 is compliant with EN 50155. 3 years warranty is offered for parts and labour.

A compact ( 333×228×50 mm) and rugged solution features:

  •  10.4 inches resistant display with glare filter as well as automatic and manual brightness adjustment. Touchscreen can be installed upon request
  • Keyboard is designed with a focus on usability: 26 function keys with back light, special purpose key of display operating mode control («auto», «day», «night», «OFF»). Key codes are programmable, back light brightness can be adjusted.

There are various customization options for this Panel PC, such as: functional expansion by installation of up to two expansion modules in mini PCIe format. Key symbols replacement is possible with with codes reprogramming. Dear readers, I’d like to share some industry news with you. This autumn, a new working group, «Space CompactPCI Serial» was launched in order to adjust the current CompactPCI Serial specification to the particular requirements for space applications by creating a sub-standard. The sub-committee was initiated by PICMG member companies and well-known industry leaders, such as Airbus Defense & Space, Thales Alenia Space, and STI Spacetech and assembled by Manfred Schmitz, CEO of MEN Mikro Elektronik GmbH.

The new technical PICMG sub-committee «Space CompactPCI Serial» is aiming to . Space CompactPCI Serial will add the Spacewire interface for external communications and Serial Rapid I/O for high speed, deterministic board-to-board communications. The fault detection, high availability,  and environmental requirements will also be taken into account. The standard is to remain simple and understandable and to guarantee a maximum of interoperability between bus slots and boards.

Space CompactPCI Serial Headed Working Group

 CompactPCI has a long success history in space applications, from the famous «Curiosity» Mars rover to satellite control, and scientific tasks in the ISS. CompactPCI Serial base specification already has the mechanical and conduction cooling technologies needed for space already defined and in place, according to John Pavlat, the president of PICMG consortium (info@picmg.org) .

Therefore, Space CompactPCI Serial is a logical step in the industry evolution, based on implementation of successful high tech solutions in highly sophisticated and demanding market,  also resulting in significant cost reductions.

Dear readers, here’s a brief overview* of the most recent, innovative and curious NAND flash storage solutions, including iSLC technology, data erasing solutions and the latest development by Micron&Intel — 3D NAND Flash solution. The overview is based on a presentation by Noud Bertens, Innodisk, during the Telerex event (Breda, the Netherlands, 14/10/2015) where Fastwel has been invited as as special guest.

*Fastwel and Innodisk are system partners in the field of embedded flash storage. A range of rugged CPU modules in CPCI, PC104, StackPC form-factors, manufactured by Fastwel, comes with Innodisk memory products.

iSLC — a new approach to Single Level Cell technology.

iSLC is a new, cost efficient, but at the same time effective solution. iSLC provides high performance with 30000 Program Erase Cycles and the Initial data retention period of 10 years. This is 10 times more effective than the MLC solution, with a price up to 50% lower than a standard SLC solution.

Data erasing — 3 security measures:

  • QErase —  data is being mixed and erased by pressing a button — this mechanical solution is simple and allows to remove the data quickly.
  • Security erase — The data is being mixed and overwritten with non-existent data.
  • Destroy function- 28V additional power is applied sequentially to each of the memory cell, which causes their immediate self destruction by simply burning.

3D Xpoint

3D Xpoint is a new, 3D NAND flash solution, being developed by Micron and Intel, with a release planned in 2016. It is a promising technology  indeed, which appears to be 1000 times faster and 10 times denser than an ordinary NAND. More details in a video:

Fastwel presents its rugged embedded systems for aerospace at MAKS 2015(Moscow, August 25-30), one of the leading Business Expos among the World’s largest Aerospace Forums with more than 800 exhibitors from all over the world.

Being  the leading Russian based embedded electronics manufacturer, Fastwel highlighted its CPCI, PC\104, StackPC, COM Express rugged solutions as well as tablet PCs for aerospace industry.

StackPC for on-board automatic control systems

The primary focus of on-board system design engineers was related to Fastwel embedded modules in StackPC form-factor    due to the unique combination of performance, low power consumption, small size, and set of  high-speed interfaces  4×1 PCI_Express, 6×USB 2.0, 2×SATA II, 2×USB 2.0, 2×SA provided by StackPC expansion connector.
