CPCI Legacy/PICMG 2.30/S.0 systems compatibility
Very often the success of a new technical project or system upgrade is based on the support of succession technologies. A striking example is the wide popularity of the x86 processor architecture, which supports the operation of legacy program code.
CompactPCI Serial specification enables to implement hybrid systems where the peripherals are based on both serial interconnects and on legacy 32-bit or 64-bit PCI -buses.
Application of CPC510 in hybrid system makes it possible to use 32-bit Compact PCI modules in addition to CompactPCI Serial peripheral modules. Operation with PICMG 2.30 backplane requires using CPC510-02 version only, which represents an assembly including CPC510 and MIC590.
Use of the unified backplane makes the system highly compact and reduces the range of components applied. Apart from that, CPC510-02 ensures smooth transition from the traditional Legacy or PICMG 2.30 systems to a new Compact PCI Serial standard with minimum investments. CPC510-01 module can be included into the PICMG 2.30 standard as an additional CPU board installed into the peripheral Compact PCI Serial connector of PICMG 2.30 backplane.
The structure of CPC510 makes it possible to create a wide range of devices with various functionalities. Board-to-board connectors with PCI Express x4, SATA, LPC interfaces enable to design highly reliable and efficient compact systems.
New Smart Power Management
CPC510 is equipped with new connectors which allowed to improve the power supply system. 3U Compact PCI Serial CPC510 requires only one +12 V (+5V_STBY (optional) ) maximum input power of 75,6 W.
CPC510 is equipped with a universal power supply circuit that enables power supply unit (PSU) to operate in two modes: with support of PSU control (similar to the control used in ATX PSUs) and without the control support. During operation of CPC510, each of the specified modes could be used in the system slot of Compact PCI Serial backplane.
Temperature control structure of CPC510 can be presented as certain functions which purpose is to protect CPU and decrease its energy consumption. Use of thermal control circuits makes it possible for CPU to maintain safe operating temperature without special software drivers and interrupt processing procedures.
CPU thermal protection functions:
- The "Catastrophic shutdown detector" technology ensures CPU switching off if the cooling system fails and crystal die reaches the temperature of about 105°C. This function is always active in order to protect CPU in any case. The temperature control circuit is not switched off automatically when the temperature falls below the "thermal trip" level: to reboot the system it is required to reset the BIOS settings. The BIOS settings can be reset in accordance with the sequence described in section 5.2. When there is no battery, it is sufficient to simply restart the power supply unit.
- Enhanced SpeedStep®: when temperature of the crystal die core exceeds 100°C, CPU is dynamically switched to low power consumption mode with the reduced core operating voltage and internal multiplication factor.
- An external temperature monitor (LM87) is designed for the collection of information on CPU and board surface temperature. An additional temperature monitor controls memory chip temperature. This information can be used by the control program in order to take the required steps.
If CPC510 operates with sufficient air circulation under operating conditions considered to be normal for CompactPCI, the temperature control functions will not be necessary. However, when environmental parameters are not appropriate for the module based on Intel IvyBridge, the temperature control functions are switched on to provide stable operation. Thermal control makes it possible for the developers to create cost-effective solutions and at the same time maintain a high level of system reliability and integrity.
New Interconnects (2x8 6х4 PCI-E/SRIO, 8x1 SATA, 8x1 USB2.0/2.0, 8x1 USB2.0/2.0)
CPC 510 has the following interconnect types:
- 2 x PCI Express interfaces x8 Gen 2 (Fat Pipe)
- 4 x PCI Express interfaces x4 Gen 2
- 3x SATA2 channels
- 2x SATA3 channels
- 8x USB 2.0
- 4x USB 3.0
At the physical level, each channel consists of two differential pairs that provide data transfer from source to receiver and back. As all CompactPCI Serial interconnects are serial, the specification also describes their topology, defining PCIe, SATA, and USB in star topologies with the system controller as a host.
New Mechanics (2 Guidance rails, all connectors are located in the upper part)
According to the CompactPCI Serial specification, now CPC510 has an additional mechanical element which helps to direct and align the board.
Simple Conduction Cooling
Stable operation and long-term reliability are provided by the specially designed heat sinks. When they are used along with system enclosure that ensures air stream controlled parameters, the regulated dissipation of heat energy is guaranteed. All CPC510 versions are equipped with optimally designed heat sinks. Their size, form and structure provide the best values of thermal resistance factors (Rth). Apart from that, they are meant for the efficient use of the forced air ventilation system of modern CompactPCI systems’ enclosures.
